About this site
Is this the Population Association of Pakistan’s official website?
No. This site is not operated by, affiliated with or endorsed by the Association. It is an independent information project that publishes open population data for Pakistan and keeps a factual record of the Annual Population Research Conference series.
Can I join the Association, or pay dues, through this site?
No. This site cannot enrol members, take subscriptions or accept payments of any kind, and will never ask you for money. The membership page describes how the Association organises its membership as a matter of public information only.
The population data
Where do the numbers come from?
Historical population and vital rates come from the World Bank’s open World Development Indicators. Projections, median age and world share come from the United Nations World Population Prospects. City figures come from the UN World Urbanization Prospects. All three are openly published and free to use; links are on every data page.
Is the counter live?
It updates every second, though it is not a feed from a register. Official figures are published once a year, for 1 July; the counter interpolates between the surrounding two on a compound-growth curve. Births, deaths and net migration are apportioned from the published annual change using the crude birth and death rates, so the three always add back to the official total exactly.
How often is the underlying data refreshed?
The World Bank series is re-fetched on a schedule and the dataset rebuilt automatically. The UN projection anchors are updated when a new revision of World Population Prospects is published, roughly every two years. The build date is shown under each dashboard.
Can I reuse the data?
The figures here are reproduced from openly published UN and World Bank datasets, so the simplest route is to take them from the original sources and cite those. Every chart on this site also has a table view beneath it showing the underlying numbers.
The conference record
What is the Annual Population Research Conference?
It is a conference series on population and development in Pakistan, convened annually since 2000, each year with a host university. The themes and host institutions of past conferences are listed under Our History.
Why are the conference galleries empty?
The photographs were not preserved in the public web archives this site’s historical material was recovered from. The conference titles, themes and host institutions were, and those are published.
