How the live figure is calculated
Official figures are published once a year, for 1 July. The counter interpolates between the 2026 and 2027 figures on a compound-growth curve, which is how demographic series are meant to be read between reference dates, and keeps the curve smooth across year boundaries. Births and deaths are then split out of that year’s total change in proportion to the crude birth rate (27.4 per 1,000) and crude death rate (6.4 per 1,000), so that births − deaths + net migration always equals the published annual change exactly. Nothing here is a live census: the figure is interpolated from the published annual series.
